GNN Status

First of all, I would like to explain the lack of posts recently;
Sim and I have been out of the country, and we did not prepare properly for our absence. We apologize for the inactivity.

Also, in out spare time we have been busy with a certain project. Sim and I have been developing a number of video game concepts, and mainly focusing on one in particular. I plan on taking this to Nintendo soon, and I will update you guys on the status of the project when I am able to.

Depending on the success of said project, we are likely going to put up a new Web site under the name of our game team, and GNN will redirect to it. Trust me, this would be the best-case scenario. The Web site would have a lot more features and things than GNN, while maintaining the aspect of Nintendo fan-journalism, but in a more personal light. I have great long-term plans for that site, and I'm sure it will be more enjoyable for you ad for us.

So wish us luck on the presentation, and be awaiting news on it!
Again, we apologize for the recent inactivity.

Nintendo @ E3: Impressions

I have added my reactions to certain announcements from Nintendo's press conference. If another Admin would like to, feel free to put your own in below.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
I did see the leaked pictures that prooved it would be playable, and I was very skeptical at first.
NSMB was a fantastic game for the DS, don't get me wrong - but initially I thought that another game would just be more of the same gameplay that we already had in the DS version. When it was shown being played by the Nintendo employees, I thought that the 4-way multi-player aspect was a good idea, but nothing too special. You would expect it in a Wii game.
At that point I was on the fence, until I learned that it will not support WiFi battles. Big downer. Nintendo will have to pack a lot into this game to justify a full Wii software purchase.
  • Wii Fit Plus
I didn't see too much added content to this version, and I already own the original. I hope that the standalone software is around $20-$25, because buying it by itself without the Balance Board really shouldn't be $50. Wii Fit costs too much, and it doesn't merit an expensive upgrade.
  • Wii Sports Resort
Archery looks awesome. They really did well on this one, and judging by how much the presenter messed up during the showing, this one will take some skill. We've all wanted to shoot an arrow like that with our Wii Remote/Nunchucks since Zelda was announced.
Also, Basketball looks great. Can't wait to get my hands on that bundle.
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
There wasn't much new announced to talk about for this game, but they picked a good name for it, and it looks great.
  • Golden Sun DS
Call me crazy, bu I haven't played one of these games yet. I know Sim has, so let's see what he thinks about a sequel.
  • Flip Note Studio
Why does Japan get everything before us ;_;
Just joking - but I'm glad to see this will be coming to DSiWare.
  • Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again
Nintendo announced something coming out seven days later? Wow.
800 Nintendo points is a bit on the expensive side, but a stage creator function is a great idea.
I'll have to look into how much content it has before dishing out that many points, though.
  • WarioWare: DIY
Make your own mini-games? That's a great time-killer!
  • Wii Vitality Sensor
... What in the world? Nintendo - you forgot to tell us things like how this will be used in... stuff...
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
Yoshi - smart move.
Oh wait - Galaxy 2?
Maybe a few people saw this as a possibility, but it really was a surprise. However, the game looks about the same as the original, but Mr. Cassamasina reports that 90-95 % of the content will be all new. We won't know how this will go until it happens, because Mario has never made a move like this before.
  • Metroid: Other M
The opening cinematic gives us a view of a stormy sea, then flies up into the clouds.
Kid Icarus, I knew it.
But it shows a very realistic woman through the window of an aircraft.
Oh. Looks like Sin & Punishment...
Wait - that was Zero Suit Samus!
Other M, huh? What a strange name. Never mind that, though, the game looks beautiful! From graphics to gameplay to story, this is one Metorid game - no - this is one game that every Nintendo fan should want to tear into.
I'm very interested to see how this game transitions from a 1st person perspective to 3rd person, and how it will switch from side-scrolling to 3D "adventure" type of gameplay.
But overall, I just want 2010 to come.
And Nintendo? Please, please, please don't delay this game... Just finish it and get it into our hands.

----

Overall, this year's show was tons better than the past few years'. I was disappointed that know WiiHD was revealed, and Other M would have been a fantastic title to launch along-side it. But on the other hand, I'm just relieved that Nintendo hasn't ignored their hard-core audience.

Thanks, Nintendo!

Review: Pikmin

Note: This review was for the Gamecube version, not Wii.

One of the more unique ideas to come from Shigeru Miyamoto, Pikmin has you in control of Captain Olimar; who has crash-landed on far-future Earth, who needs to rebuild his damaged ship with creatures he calls Pikmin. Pikmin are small plant-animals that are plucked from the ground by Olimar. They come in three varieties: Red; standard Pikmin with good attack, Yellow; light Pikmin that can be thrown high and set explosives, and Blue; the heaviest Pikmin and the only kind that survives in water.

Using these creatures well is of utmost importance to Olimar, as he only has thirty days to collect all of his scattered ship parts. There are three areas to explore: The Impact Site, The Forest of Hope, and The Forest Navel, with a fourth area available after all the ship parts have been discovered in the first three.

Pikmin are versatile in their ability to help Olimar. They can be thrown, used to destroy barriers, vanquish enemies, build bridges, carry ship parts, and tote fallen enemies back to their nests to be transformed into more Pikmin. When left in the ground the leaf on a Pikmin's head will turn into a bud, a flower, and back into a leaf if left for too long. Flowers and buds are faster and more powerful than leaves. Only 100 can be in the level at one time, this includes any wildPikmin and those buried in the ground.

At the end of the day any Pikmin left behind will be eaten by nocturnal predators, so it is important to get them back to their ships before nightfall. This brings me to some of the negatives about the game. Since you are timed many players will not enjoy being rushed through the game. Also there are some enemies and elemental hazards that can be extremely frustrating. Strategy is a must if you hope to collect all of the missing ship parts.

The positives are plenty though. Since Olimar is only 3 inches tall, Earth is gargantuan to him. Dandelions are like sky-scrapers, trees are massive vertical obstacles, and trash such as rusted tin cans are 20 foot wide tunnels. The level design is well implemented, forcing you to be creative with your Pikmin's abilities and the terrain. The music has a sort of nature feel to it, fitting in well with the organic environments. The graphics are more on the animated side, rather than life-like but their fit the game's story well.

Ratings for the game's central points.

Gameplay mechanics: 8.0/10, I liked it but it won't please everyone.
Level design: 9.0/10, Superbly done with a few annoying areas.
Music: 8.5/10, Nicely done and went well with the environments.
Overall 8.5/10 Haven't played the new version but it probably would be worth the money.

Metroid Prime Trilogy: Multiplayer

IGN reports that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes does indeed retain its multiplayer mode in the Trilogy release. Not that we don't trust the guys, but GNN had already sent in a quarry as to weather or not Metroid prime Trilogy will come with a multiplayer mode, so we will have official word soon. However, it is safe to say that the IGN reporters are correct. [Thankfully!]

Metroid Prime Trilogy Announced

Just announced is a game for Wii set to be released on August 24 at the standard price of $50, but will contain all three Metroid Prime games on one disc.

While the storylines and settings have not been touched, the first two installments have been revamped to include new controls with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.

More details are coming soon...

Puch-Out Sucker-Punches Shelves

The wait is over. Fans of the original Punch-Out finally have a sequal and it's out today! Check it out:
Today the world of video game boxing returns to its roots with the launch of the new Punch-Out!!™ game for Nintendo's Wii™ console. The game brings immersive motion controls to an iconic franchise that has been around since the days of the NES™. Players are invited to step into the ring as underdog Little Mac as they go toe-to-toe with an array of memorable characters, including familiar faces like Glass Joe, King Hippo and Don Flamenco.
The motion-sensitive Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers turn the swings players make in real life into on-screen punches. Both novice and veteran gamers can pick up Punch-Out!! and punch their way to the top. The optional Wii Balance Board™ accessory (sold separately withWii Fit™) can be added to provide an extra challenge for advanced players who want to literally bob and weave through their fights. For those who insist on old-school Punch-Out!!purity, the game also can be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote controller sideways.
Even players who have battled through the original games hundreds of times will find new challenges with Punch-Out!! for Wii. For instance, once Little Mac (with the help of trainer Doc Louis) has pummeled his way through all the contenders, they return to offer him new challenges in Title Defense Mode. Only this time, their traditional weaknesses have been eliminated and players must find new ways to achieve victory. In this mode, the once-harmless Glass Joe now wears headgear, and King Hippo's vulnerable belly is protected behind a manhole cover. The new twists ensure fans enjoy a completely new play experience.
For the first time in the Punch-Out!! series, a head-to-head multiplayer mode lets players compete against one another. Both players take on the role of Little Mac and match wits as they trade uppercuts, jabs and body blows. With a series of well-placed punches, Little Mac transforms into the gargantuan Giga Mac, who can land more powerful blows and is more difficult to take down.
"Punch-Out!! is back, keeping all the charm of the original while delivering a knockout punch with new twists to experience and enjoy," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "As part of one of Nintendo's most storied franchises, this new Punch-Out!! game will surprise and delight fans with even more ways to enjoy its timeless game play."

Is that tounament-material I smell?

Monday Downloads - "It's about time!"

Nintendo celebrates the launch of its 3ooth Virtual Console game by making available to us the long awaited N64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
It is available to download at 1,000 Wii Points.

In CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 for WiiWare, you'll do exactly what the name suggests - defend R2s crystals. Stop those nasty monsters form escaping with your crystals by deploying your various party members, taking advantage of their different abilities (800 Wii Points).

Also on WiiWare is Silver Star Chess, a simple but slightly expensive game without any perks that stand out. We suggest waiting for a North American release of Wii Chess.

Today on DSiWare, Art Style: PiCTOBiTS was released at 500 Nintendo Points. This nostalgic puzzle game has you matching colored blocks to reveal the stage's classic NES character, and - as if that isn't reward enough - you can earn coins to purchase more stages or for listening to tunes in music mode.
